Help with fireplace with gas starter and how do I know the flue is open?

My husband and I moved into our home a couple of months ago, and neither of us have ever lived in a home that has a fireplace. I am having Christmas dinner at our home and would like to have a fire going. I have read about using the gas starter but
Oh...you'll know fast enough !!..If you want to test if it's open light a candle or incense and place it in there in both positions. If the smoke goes up...it's open.
