Are all home thermostats the same?

I constantly have to push the thermostat against the wall for the a/c to come on, so I have a feeling it's just a faulty thermostat. Can I use any thermostat?

Most have two buttons, one for Heat/OFF/Cool and another for the fan, FAN/Auto. Fan causes the fan to run all the time, Auto the fan only runs when needed by the A/C unit. You should set it for Auto and Cool
