Why do we have to warm up the engine of our car when it was turned on ?

My dad says that when I start the car engine,I must wait for a while to warm up the engine.But I dont understand why ?
Engines need extra fuel to start up from cold.
Nowadays the computer and a bunch of temperature sensors manage this, but 20-30 years ago it was a manual process for most cars, and getting the choke setting wrong could mean the engine running
